One of the challenges but also pleasures of revitalising this particular arcade was the random selection of verandah types. While they may have started out the same, decades of modifications by the people living there resulted in an eclectic mix of styles. Some had the railings removed, others were embellished with unique, geometrical, decorative patterns. The way in which these railings have been conserved reflects the random nature of the decorative design of the tong laus previously. However, where there were unauthorised structures on rooftops, these have been demolished to comply with the Buildings Ordinance while replicating the original form of the verandahs of tong laus back in the 1920s.
