As Hong Kong’s industrial economy started to boom, the local leather industry also emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. In early 1950s during the Korean War, local leather manufacturer supplied a special type of leather tanned from plants to the People’s Liberation Army to meet the demand in the Mainland. The leather products included holsters, sword cases, military shoes, backpacks and waist packs. Local leather factories also produced a large number of leather products for daily wear, such as shoes, belts, bags, car seats, and steering wheels. Since the 1980s, factories have gradually moved northwards to the Mainland, together with the higher price and durability of leather as well as the emergence of faux leather, the leather industry has diminished in Hong Kong.
